Your first taste of Jonathan Huxley’s new show, Boys Own Stories.

He’s a city lad, Jonathan. Whatever memories or landscapes lie behind the titles, new canvasses like ‘Golfing Heroes’ or ‘A Swan Lexicon’ pulsate with an immediate, urban life. Where Lowry’s millmen drag their boots, Huxley’s frantic figures look about to fill their’s. Constantly on the move, often poised above the ground, these jaywalkers and moochers vibrate with a rush-hour, pre-pub urgency. Men on bikes, furniture, and a seemingly ubiquitous tank roam from frame to frame. It’s Huxley’s vigour and deftness as a painter that keeps this jittery lexicon of images a coherent whole. Ideas spill out, but a visual depth and a sensitivity to colour and composition stop them from getting too boisterous.... more >>
